Frequently Asked Questions
Do you have any new availability for lessons?
There is currently a 6 to 9 month wait to start your tuition and this is dependent on your location.
Automatic Tuition & General Enquiries
Can I drive a manual gearbox car if I pass my driving test in an automatic?
No. If you want to drive a manual gearbox vehicle on the road then you must pass your driving test in a car with a manual gearbox.
Do you offer manual lessons?
No.
Do I need my driving licence to drive with you?
Yes. You must have a driving licence and produce it on your first lesson.
If you have applied for a licence and are waiting for it to arrive it’s still ok to book your first driving lesson but you must have it for your lesson.
Do I need to have passed my theory test before starting lessons?
There's no need to have passed your theory test before your lessons begin but it is recommended that you have started to revise and read through the Highway Code and Know Your Traffic Signs books, as well as downloading a theory test support app such as Driving Test Success.
Will my instructor be a fully qualified driving instructor?
Jonathan is a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) and has undergone qualifying exams as well as a DBS (formerly CRB) check.
Will there be anyone else in the car with me?
Other than your instructor the only people allowed in the driving tuition vehicle is the examiner on test day and occasionally a representative from the DVSA (Driver Vehicle Standards Agency) who may be testing the instructor.
If you would like a friend or relative to accompany you in your lesson then after discussion with your instructor this is usually allowed.
On a driving test your instructor is allowed to accompany candidates on their tests.
I have a driving test booked and am looking for an instructor. Can you help?
Unfortunately I don't have capacity to help new candidates who have booked a driving test in the near future. I am fully committed to existing clients. It is recommended you only take your driving test after ensuring you have had sufficient practice and taken advice from an Approved Driving Instructor.
Disability
Do you cater for me if I have a learning disability?
Absolutely! Learning to drive should be inclusive and we'll do your best to help you learn and overcome any learning disability you may have that you may have thought would prevent you from driving a car. Why not get in touch to discuss your requirements in person?
What about physical disability?
Your driving lessons can be adapted to assist you overcome some physical disabilities. Indeed since October 2022 I have found that I am dealing with more enquiries from physically disabled persons who do not have full mobility. Again, do contact Jonathan to discuss how you can get behind the driving wheel and learn to drive.
Lessons and Payments
How much are your driving lessons?
From April 2025 driving lesson fees start from £46 for an hour with 90 minute lessons at £69. Your first driving lesson has a money back guarantee.
It also costs £92 to use your driving tuition vehicle on the day of your driving test no matter how long the session is. This is in addition to the current DVSA weekday test fee of £62. Weekend fees are subject to a surcharge.
Wherever you learn to drive you should be budgeting for around £1200 - £2500 throughout the course of your tuition. Pricing is reviewed every April.
How do I pay for my lessons?
Paying for your driver training is easy. I accept debit and credit cards as well as Apple Pay, Google Pay and AMEX. You can pay for your lessons in-car on the day or through your My Drive Time app and this website.
I use the payment gateway Square which means that your transactions are private and secure. It’s also possible to pay using a bank transfer after receipt of an invoice.
Sorry I don’t accept cheques.
How are my lessons managed?
I use an app called MyDriveTime where you can manage your driving lessons from. You can keep an eye on your progress, read lesson summaries, look at the route you drove on your last driving lesson, check your driving lesson account balance and view forthcoming driving lesson dates, theory test and driving test information.
Do you offer blocks of lessons?
No. However you may pay for a group of lessons in one lump sum if you prefer. Simply request an invoice and pay it before your next lesson.
How many lessons will I need to pass my test?
Unfortunately I can’t answer this question. Government statistics state that the ‘average person’ passes their driving test after 47 hours of tuition plus 22 hours of private practice.
I aim for about 30-40 hours of tuition over 4-12 months though this can’t be guaranteed and may be less or more.
How many lessons can I have a week?
Rather than offer you a driving lesson on a set day and time each week you have the flexibility of booking your own tuition when it best suits you. In normal circumstances I advise a maximum of 2 lessons a week.
I offer increased availability to current students nearing their driving test.
Can you send reminders for my lessons?
Certainly. You'll receive an app notification from MyDriveTime 2 days before your lesson. You can snooze this notification to a time nearer to the lesson start if you wish.
Do you charge for cancelled lessons?
As long as you notify me 48 hours before the start of your lesson there is no charge to cancel your driving lesson.
Please call or text Jonathan on 07919 203370. Do think about other clients who could have used your lesson.
Your full lesson fee will be due if you if you are unfit through drink or drugs.
Is it ok to practice in-between my driving lessons?
Absolutely. In fact it’s something that I encourage. Once you feel safe to drive your own vehicle with a friend or member of your family then private practice will mean that you’ll improve your driving skills and are likely to pass your driving test sooner.
You can ask your supervising driver to accompany you on part of one of your lessons to see how you are progressing which will help them to have confidence in your ability too.
If you are looking for insurance, why not consider 'bolt on' insurance for young people. Your supervisors car insurance is protected and any claims are made through your own insurance.
